How to Wash Your Hair Properly for Healthy, Shiny Results (Step-by-Step Guide)

Has your hair routine felt boring and useless lately? Are you looking for a way to give life to your hair? Then let’s shake up your hair care routine!

Why your hair-washing routine matters?

Washing hair is crucial for getting rid of sweat, oil, and styling product residue, which prevents scalp inflammation, and infections like dandruff. It promotes a healthy, breathable scalp environment necessary for hair growth, while also increasing volume, enhancing texture, and maintaining a clean appearance.

Mistakes to avoid

Some hair washing mistakes (which you should definitely avoid) include using water that is too hot, scrubbing the scalp too harshly, applying conditioner to the roots, skipping shampoo/using the wrong type and washing way too many times a week. Other damaging habits are rubbing wet hair with a towel, not rinsing thoroughly, and brushing hair while wet.

I personally have made some mistakes along the way, like washing up with very hot water, and saw that my hair got dry and fell a lot. Now I’ve changed to lukewarm water and I can clearly see the difference it has made.

Steps:

  1. Brush to detangle.

Use a wide-tooth comb or soft brush to detangle, starting from the bottom-up. This will make cleansing easier for you later on.

2. Soak thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Time to wash your hair! Wetting your hair from the scalp and roots to the lengths allows the shampoo to work and rinse more effectively later. Lukewarm water helps open the hair cuticle, allowing shampoo to cleanse effectively without stripping natural oils. Hot water, on the other hand, can dry out both your scalp and hair, leading to frizz and breakage.

3. Massage shampoo in the scalp.

Put shampoo directly to the scalp and massage it gently. You can even use a scalp massager to boost and stimulate hair growth. Putting shampoo in the lengths will not be of any use, so try to focus on the scalp mostly. Don’t forget to rinse well as lingering shampoo can cause scalp irritation and dull hair.

4. Apply conditioner.

Squeeze out excess water and apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Let it sit for about 2 to 3 minutes, or as much as the bottle says. Rinse with cool water to close the hair cuticles.

5. Finish with a towel dry.

Use a microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair. Avoid harsh rubbing, instead squeeze or pat gently. Using cotton cloth (like a t-shirt or specialized towel) for hair drying reduces friction, prevents frizz, and minimizes breakage compared to traditional terry cloth towels. Cotton is highly absorbent, helping to gently wick away moisture and protect the hair cuticle while drying.

Bottom line

Healthy hair doesn’t come from complicated routines—it comes from doing the basics correctly and consistently. Once you master this routine, you’ll start noticing softer, shinier, and more manageable hair over time.

Brush, wet, shampoo, use conditioner, towel dry and you’re ready to go. Don’t forget to use the products for your hair type and texture, and try to remember the basic NOs: NO harsh scrubbing, NO conditioner to the roots, NO excessive washing, NO sizzling water. Wash between 2 to 3 times a week and rinse for 1 to 2 minutes. Enjoy your road to hair health!
